Put roughly 775 miles on it this weekend travelling from Missouri to Kansas and back. 160 of those were pure EV, averaged 40.4 mpg. Would people be interested in a full on Oppo review?

Also ate delicious chicken, !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! , and went to a family reunion.

Is it completely inoffensive?

What size engine is in the Fusion?

2.0, but it’s a hybrid.

Completely, it is a driving appliance.

I know a few people that own them for DD’s, and they fricken love them. I drove one of them and would not mind it for 100% DD duty. I just need something very analog parked with it.

Oh, right. I forgot about the 2.0TiVCT Hybrid, it’s top UKmpg is 67 (USmpg 56) so getting 40+USmpg real-world is very good.

I think most Mondeo owners know have the 2.0 TDCi Duratorq engine here.

Yeah I can imagine, it’s not tremendously exciting to drive, but it’s comfortable and gets rock steady mileage.

This is primarily highway miles too, where it’s less well suited.

We had a C-Max with the 2.0 TDCi Duratorq as a rental, it was hilarious on the autobahn.

Hilarious? I could imagine it would be interesting in side winds being quite an upright car but I couldn’t imagine it being described as hilarious.

It mostly just soldiered along, but we did hit 180 kph at one point, only to get passed by a 5-series going considerably quicker.

The 2.0 litre diesel is a very solid engine favoured by many drivers as it’s solid, efficient and responsive (not like a performance car but for a daily driver).

Diesels are great but I wouldn’t get the benefit of it with mostly short journeys.

Diesel hybrids really should be a more common thing.

I don’t know anyone with a hybrid. Though there is a Prius taxi in my city. There are some interesting taxis where I am.

Too expensive. Peugeot have made one but they’re not doing another. Merc had an E class diesel hybrid but there’s no mention of it for the new model.

Then again, diesel hybrid buses are increasingly a thing.

I’ve been on one of these.

The other problem is that a diesel engine’s strengths and weaknesses don’t align that well with a hybrid system’s strengths and weaknesses.

So, a hybrid system provides the following:

Regenerative braking

The ability to keep the engine out of inefficient, low-power operating regions

Faster start-stop behavior

More low-end torque (due to electric torque delivery)

And, a hybrid system’s biggest weaknesses:

Cost

Weight

The problem is that a diesel is already relatively efficient at its low-power operating regions due to the lack of throttle plate, and it already has very good low-end torque. And, a modern diesel is still heavier than a gasoline engine, and the emissions controls are expensive. The start-stop behavior and the regenerative braking, however, are useful.

Contrast with a gasoline engine, where Atkinsonization improves the thermal efficiency to near diesel levels at the expense of low-end torque (made up for by the electric motor), and the hybrid system keeps it from having to close the throttle plate. (At light loads, it can just take excess power into the battery, then shut the engine down and use that saved up charge.) My Prius’s engine hits 40% thermal efficiency as a result- I believe the best passenger diesels are 45%, and most are in the low 40s. And, if it’s CO2 you care about, diesel puts out slightly more CO2 per unit of energy, too.

How does it compare to a Volt? I’m always kind of curious why someone would get anything else but then again, I’ve never driven any of them.

The Fusion a bigger car. The Volt shares quite a bit of the Cruze platform.
